“This Scene is Over,” not really, and The Fades are Just Getting Started!

I’m really excited to listen to The Fades' latest release, “This Scene is Over”. The post-punk/garage indie band from London, UK, states that “This Scene is Over”, and the first thought that came to my mind is that their statement is about the indie punk scene being dead. But I, as a lifelong punk kid, refuse to believe that. Even though the title reflects the obvious reality and doesn’t give much hope about the “scene”, let’s give it a listen and find out what this at first sight destructive title is about!

The atmosphere is pure punk, with a clean garage sound and raw indie vibes. The production is impressively balanced, but you also get the feeling of a well-mixed live performance recording. The atmosphere is impulsive and driving. From the first seconds, it’s totally clear that this is authentic punk with electric guitar riffs that kick us into the song, and you immediately feel the urge in your bones to start a mosh pit. The musical hook leads us into the verse and drives us back into the chorus. Meanwhile, the drums are carrying the song all the way through and support in the right places without overpowering. The feeling of being pushed back into early 2000s punk, like Blink-182, cannot be denied. But it's a very good feeling, and The Fades transferred this nostalgia into the present. It feels fresh and exciting, and this little push back into former times is a beautiful one.

The message is deeply relevant. It’s about closing venues, inflation, competition, and the pressure of a lack of support and exposure, which limits possibilities and, therefore, motivation for independent artists. Everything feels limiting. As the band tells us - “This scene is over, over now...” it actually captures the exhaustion, frustration, but also the genuine passion for music that drives independent musicians to keep going, despite everything. The Fades, through the creation of the song, is actually cleverly denouncing the notion that 'this scene is over,' when in reality they are getting started, hence the title of this article. This song is a crucial reminder that punk is not just about rebellion. It’s also passion, resilience in a hard industry, and ofcourse, about hope. And it is with this hope that indie musicians continue to create and stay determined. This song celebrates the punk heart and grit that we all also need in our lives at some point. So this is your chance to stand beside them to prove the title wrong, go listen to “The Scene is Over” below, and support this amazing punk band!
