Alex Wellkers, the German-Swiss musician, with his latest album Reach the Stars, doesn’t just aim high, but he constructs a 13-track odyssey that feels part rock opera, part folk confession, and part cinematic score. Layered with harps, strings, pianos, and guitars, and bound together by his rugged, unpolished vocals, the record refuses to play it safe. It’s ambitious, multilingual, and unapologetically dramatic, sometimes messy, often breathtaking, but always reaching for something bigger than the moment!

The record opens with “We Knew It All,” a curtain-raiser that hints at Wellkers’ love for grandeur. It begins tenderly, with dreamy piano chords, before swelling into something more electric and stormy. That balance of intimacy and drama sets the tone for much of the album. “Bring Me the Keys” leans further into pop-rock urgency, with violins weaving through the melody, while “See Me There” highlights his rough-edged vocal delivery, which oddly enough gives the track more authenticity. These early moments show Wellkers’ knack for taking small, reflective ideas and turning them into something larger than life. From there, the album stretches its legs. “Desert Island” and “There Is Cars” expand his storytelling with layered instrumentation of piano, cello, and electric guitar, though sometimes the narrative risks slipping into the overly literal. What saves it is his instinct for atmosphere, and even when the lyrics tread familiar ground, the sonic world he builds feels rich, textured, and dramatic.

One of the most striking aspects of "Reach the Stars" is its multilingual palette. “Alles Nicht So Schlimm,” sung in German, is a turning point, where his phrasing and emphasis feel sharper, almost poetic. Then comes “Tu Es Ici,” in French, offering a gentler, more romantic texture, even if non-French speakers may struggle to connect with the lyrics, the emotional weight is still there. These shifts don’t feel like gimmicks; instead, they reinforce Wellkers’ identity as an artist rooted in European diversity. Just when the album risks becoming too contemplative, he pivots. “She Will Say” and “The Key” crank up the guitars, shifting into alt-rock territory with faster tempos and a punk-ish edge. “Mystic Saint” goes even further, unleashing darker basslines and gritty guitar work that inject much-needed volatility into the tracklist. By the time we reach “What Are You Searching For,” Wellkers has fully embraced a more alternative rock sound, the groove-heavy bassline anchoring one of the record’s most memorable late-album cuts. But Wellkers isn’t content to end on pure electricity. “Now the Pages Been Turned” brings the pace back down to an acoustic folk mode that is intimate, stripped down, and almost confessional. It’s the quiet before the storm of “Au Revoir,” a six-and-a-half-minute closer that revisits all the album’s themes, rock intensity, orchestral richness, and acoustic vulnerability in one sweeping finale. It’s the kind of ambitious closer that demands patience but rewards those willing to sit through its twists and turns.

If I had to choose one track that encapsulates "Reach the Stars", it would be “See Me There.” It embodies the record’s essence - the fusion of rock, pop, acoustic instrumentation, and folk sensibility, tied together by lyrics about perseverance, visibility, and survival. It’s not the flashiest song here, but it’s the most representative of what Alex Wellkers is aiming for with a layered, multilingual, genre-blending statement of identity. Of course, "Reach the Stars" is not without flaws. But it’s also bold, beautiful, and unmistakably his. At times, the ambition veers into melodrama. His 2024 album, "Fly Away", was a solid foundation, but this album stretches higher, reaching for a sense of permanence. You can tell he wants these songs to linger, to be revisited, to grow deeper with each listen. And in many ways, they do.
