Welsh pop starlet Macy released a new retro-pop disco extravaganza entitled “Swear Down” on 1 February, and (spoiler alert) it is fantastic. Yes, folks, the 80s sound is back, and (judging by the effervescent vibe of “Swear Down”) it’s not taking any prisoners. Marrying the best of Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” with the best of Dua Lipa’s…well…everything, what we have here is one of the most joyous & catchiest pop masterpieces in ages.
Macy started off at a young age, having entered “The Open Mic UK” competition at the tender age of eleven…and her experience definitely shows. There is a certain effortless swagger in the delivery of her vocals, which frankly sound like the very essence of a good time. This is not mere studio trickery; rather, this is a seasoned yet still youthful pro who knows what she wants and how to get it.
Production-wise, “Swear Down” is an incredibly crisp confection that manages to blend warm synths, 8-bit chiptunes, disco guitar riffs, and tinkly piano parts into a whole that is equal to the sum of its parts without ever becoming cluttered…no easy feat there. This, my friends, is how you have a densely layered track that sounds effortless.
“I don’t wanna freak you out but it’s all I can think about”, sings Macy in one of the many memorable lyrics…you might find yourself saying that about this very song, in fact. It’s no hyperbole for me to say this, as this just may be the best pop song I’ve heard in years. Give it a listen (or twelve)....you’ll be glad you did.
