“In the First Place” is a tight, hard-rocking banger of a song. “Who falls in love in the first place,” vocalist Rose asks – and the answer, at least for this song, is probably just about anyone who hears it. It’s energetic, catchy, and it grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. Faded Rose have a heater on their hands with this one for sure.
The New York-based band, fronted by the eponymous Faded Rose, is influenced by artists including Alanis Morisette, Stevie Nick, and Hayley Williams – influences which definitely show in “In the First Place.” The instrumentals are pop-punk flavored, but Rose’s voice – smokey and compelling – is certainly reminiscent of the aforementioned Nicks.
Coming off the success of their 2021 debut album Don’t Say and a niche hit with the single “Judgement Day,” “In the First Place” is exactly the direction one might expect a group like Faded Rose to take. The earlier songs are more pensive, while this single is direct and intentional in its lyricism and vocal delivery. Despite drawing on sonics from a good two or three decades ago now, Rose’s words and voice make the song feel fresh regardless.
“In the First Place” is the kind of song that would lend itself well to a music video – and could definitely move the needle on Faded Rose’s overall popularity. With a few more singles like this, the band could soon see themselves in the midst of the small but growing rock band resurgence bubbling up across the internet.
